ON THE ROAD

(Where in the World is Jim Dorsey?)

In the first century a Christian mystic named Augustine wrote, "The world is a book and those who do not travel read but the first page." For me these words ring true.
In 1977 my wife and I spent three months wandering around Europe in a two person tent. That gave us a taste for travel that has never been satisfied.

We have visited the far corners of the globe, sometimes way off the beaten path. We try to alternate our more moderate trips where we stay in hotels that actually have flush toilets with adventure travel mostly in the third world.

We have kayaked with Orca and walked on the Great Wall of China, stood on the summit of Machu Picchu and explored the temples of Angkor Wat. I have swum with sharks in the Carribbean, shot photos of whales for the National Wildlife federation, and traveled up the Mekong River on a grant.

I feel equally at home in a five star hotel or a rain soaked sleeping bag, as long as I am seeing new places and meeting new people.

Today, travel is a way of life for us and I have been fortunate to be able to publish many articles and photographs about where I have been and what I have done.

My latest expedition was to Xinjiang China, to photograph the Mongol, Cossack, and Ugyar minority tribes (click to enlarge):
