Thar Be Whales

My fascination with whales began as a fluke if you will pardon the pun.

In 1996 my wife and I made our first sea kayak trip together off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. On that trip we found ourselves face to face with a pod of Orcas, (Killer Whales.)

That first encounter fascinated me enough that I have spent the past decade educating myself about not only Orca but every other species of whale that lives along the rim of fire as I do.
Since that time, I have kayaked, canoed or sailed most of the coastal waters from southern Alaska to the tip of Baja, into the Sea of Cortez, plus the Channel Islands National Park and Hawaii. I have always been in pursuit of whales and have had many personal encounters, most notably with Grays, Humpbacks and Orcas.

Today I am a certified naturalist with the American Cetacean Society and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro California. I lecture and work on local whale watching boats off the California coast. During the Gray Whale migration I work as a naturalist and guide in the birth lagoon of San Ignacio, in Baja Mexico -

I have published several articles about my encounters with all forms of cetaceans and frequently lecture about them. My whale photos are featured on the website of the Cetacean Society International and have also appeared on the website of the National Wildlife Federation.
